Got a late start tonight, so I’ll have to make this quick. First, on technicalities — although the date will record this as September 12, I still consider this to be late night September 11, and therefore “today’s” writing. Just in case you were wondering.
A bit of slow going, but I took my own advice and read some Fitzgerald today, and that seemed to calm down my writing a bit. I like getting into the descriptive (still trying to keep it tight, and of course entertaining). Fitzgerald was a master at that. He has such an easy way about his writing, which is amazing because I know how much work he put into it. Most writers, you overwork the words, it really shows (I’m one of those). Stephen King says he never does more than two revisions (or whatever) so that he can keep it fresh. But someone, Fitzgerald keeps it light and fresh and polished, all at the same time. Something to strive for, I think.
Also, came up with an interesting literary device today that I don’t think has been done before. I don’t want to reveal too much right now — I’m not even sure how well it will work — but in case it does pan out, I want to record the fact that I came up with the idea today. Hopefully I’ll remember that of which I speak…
I have a few little tidbits to pass along, but I think I’ll do that tomorrow. Got to get some sleep now.
