On Thursday night, I sat down to do my hour. A few minutes later, I was overcome with a wave of nausea. It was kind of like that scene in Mission: Impossible (the first movie) where the tech goes into the locked room, and then the drug kicks in, and he has to leave. Except in the end, I wasn’t sick like that, though I certainly wasn’t well.
Yesterday, got some work in and felt better, but increasingly worse as the day wore on, so didn’t get my hour in there either.
(Incidentally, when I did get back to my office, there was a huge, black, military-style bowie knife stuck into my desk. Instinctively I looked up; the laser motion sensors were still working in the drop ceiling. Weird. But if Tom Cruise happens to come out with novel in the next few months, you know what happened…)
Anyway, got my hour in today, but it wasn’t a good one. Struggled a bit with the “what’s going to happen next” thing again. I’m beginning to embrace those though – it gives me an opportunity to throw a curve ball. If everything is so nicey-nice that the story runs out of steam, it’s a sure sign that something’s gotta give. I’m working on that break in the story right now – we’ll see where it goes.
Speaking of breaking: broke 75,000 words today though, right on Day 75, so I’m officially running at about 1,000 words per day, including dropped days. I was getting a little worried about that dropping average, but it seems that some writers get that in a good day anyway, never mind just putting in an hour per day. Besides, I’m still doing over 1,300 words per hour. I’m not saying I’m particularly prolific, but it helps to know where I stand with other writers. I don’t know why – it just does.
