Getting a bit overwhelmed today. I had to save the novel writing for the evening — in fact I’m getting quite busy with work over the last couple of days, so I imagine for the next week at least I’ll have to switch to a night-time slot for the novel. That’s going to be tough to do, I think. I used to love writing late at night, but since getting a “normal” life that needs me up and alert at around 7am, late night doesn’t work so well for me. I’m not sure how it will affect my writing.
In fact, I’m not really sure how well the writing is going at all. I once again strung together a record-breaking number of words despite floundering in the early going. I seemed to hit a stride though, moving the story forward and developing the two main characters a bit more. But I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone — I’m not sure I’m hitting the mark with plot or characterization. It’s like the guy who at the end of the episode has to re-learn English, and he’s got a picture book with a dinosaur on it and underneath it says: “Apple”. I look at the words, and I have no idea if they are any good or not.
Again, my main thing is to get the first draft down, so I’m trying not to worry about quality too much at this point. If movies are made in the editing room, then novels can be made in the rewriting. Everything can be fixed in post. Still, it’s a little disconcerting…
Ah well, I’ll focus on the positive. Another hour, another 1,600+ words!
P.S. – I changed the blog template a bit last night — I heard from two people that getting into the posts was a little confusing. Hopefully the new style is a bit more straightforward…
