Today is my eighth-favourite day of the year. The clocks go back for an extra hour – yay! I wish every day had an extra hour. Think of the extra things I could do! Today, I used it for sleep. Which is pretty much what I do with it every year. But hey, I feel refreshed. At this point, that’s one of the best things you could hope for.
Some good writing today. I’m noticing that my daily average is dropping significantly from about 1,500 words per day to just over 1,000 – and that’s not just from the bad days dragging down the average. I had a good, earnest write this morning – which I think is the key. I am starting to be more thoughtful in my writing, rather than just put it down. This is evolving naturally, I think, simply by just writing. Rather than throwing the words onto the wall and seeing what sticks, I’m taking what sticks and making it… stickier. I don’t know. The metaphor is falling apart. You know what I mean though, I hope.
I’m also becoming more relaxed about the whole thing. I’ve mentioned several times that I was worried about how the story and characters were developing (or, more accurately, how they weren’t) but I’m taking the Aerosmith approach that this story is a journey, not a destination. I have a very strong feeling that I will get a good book out of this whole thing, but even if I don’t, it is good practice for the next book.
And it’s fun. I’m really enjoying the whole process. Carving an hour out of every day is difficult sometimes, I’ll admit. But once I’ve sat down to do it, it’s almost like a creative vacation, wandering down any imaginary avenue I want, window shopping or taking in the history. (oops, another flimsy metaphor. oh well.) Isn’t that a good way to write, being relaxed about it? Yes it is.
Anyway, need to get on with other things today as well, so I’ll wrap this up.
