Fumbling Towards Part 1 – Day 286

I’m on the last leg of Part 1 in the second draft, and it’s a good feeling. Too long I’ve felt like I was spinning wheels here. I’m working on the last scene now — the climatic scene of the first part where the first plot point turns the story on its head (à la Larry Brooks’ StoryFix.com). Very exciting! The only problem is, Part 1 will be about 7,000 to 12,000 words too long. Very frustrating!

Okay, I know, it’s all part of the process. I’ll whittle it down, either right now or in the third draft. I’ve already excised pages and pages of great stuff, sacrificing them to the God of Concision. What’s 20-odd more pages between friends?

Anyway, more on that tomorrow.
